A furnace or burner system usually consists not only of the actual combustion chamber and the burners, but is an interaction of various automation and control components. Like every system, this is subject to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, among other things, in order to avoid danger to people, machines and the environment for the entire life cycle of the system. The (harmonized) standards can be used to implement the Machinery Directive. For the safety of automation systems in general, these are EN 62061 or ISO 13849-1. There are specific standards for the safety of furnace and burner systems, such as EN746-2 and EN 298, which identify risks and methods (constructive and functional) to avoid them.

The steam generator shows the use of a model-based predictive multivariable controller (Model Predictive Control, MPC) as well as various safety functions of a boiler and burner control, as found in a similar way in industrial plants.
